SEAC Smart BCD – Italian-Made Quality at a Competitive Price

I have always been a fan of SEAC products. My very first BCD was a SeacSub BCD that I used for many years. Unfortunately SEAC products are difficult to get in Thailand. All products are produced in Italy, in their own factory. No offshoring to cheap labor countries. Although the quality of production in China and Mexico is getting better and better, it’s a sign of strict quality control that SEAC keeps all production in house.

What You’re Getting

The SEAC Smart is a traditional jacket-style BCD that sits in the budget-friendly price range at around $280-340, depending on the retailer. It comes in five sizes from XXS to XL, with lift capacities ranging from 9.7 kg in the smallest sizes to 15.3 kg in the large. The BCD is available in black with red or blue accent trim.

The BCD has an integrated weight system with quick-release pockets that hold up to 4 kg each (6 kg in large and XL sizes), standard inflator with low-pressure hose, and a whistle mounted on the corrugated hose. The outer bladder is made from 1000-denier Cordura with PU coating, while the inner bladder uses 500-denier Cordura. The BCD weighs approximately 3.1-3.5 kg depending on size, making it light enough for travel.

How It Performs

Comfort and Fit

The Smart BCD has a wraparound harness that many instructors describe as very comfortable and supportive. The back pad and shoulder straps feature lightweight cushioning that provides good comfort without adding excessive bulk. Common feedback that I got from dive professionals is that it feels like a snug, secure hug without being restrictive.

Stability and Buoyancy Control

This is where the Smart BCD really stands out. In professional testing, it scored top marks for attitude and stability in the jacket BCD category. Many pros report really good attitude control in all positions and rock-solid stability in vertical orientation. The bladder inflates evenly and keeps you properly trimmed both horizontally and vertically.

The BCD features three dump valves: one on the inflator, one on the shoulder, and one on the lower back. This gives you good options for dumping air from any diving position. The inflator controls have a positive, responsive feel but are not particularly ergonomically shaped like on the Scubapro or mares models.

Weight Integration System

The weight pocket system is a bit unique and worth explaining. Each pocket has two Velcro flaps: one on top for loading weights, and one on the bottom for emergency release. To ditch your weights, you pinch the release buckle and pull down on the silver handle, which opens the bottom flap and drops the weights.

This two-step system prevents accidental weight loss, which is good for safety. The weight pockets include an internal divider to keep your weights from sliding around. The downside is that the extra security mechanism could slow down ditching in a real emergency. The system avoids the need for bulky clips and reduces the risk of accidentally losing your weights.

D-Rings and Storage

The Smart comes with six stainless steel D-rings that are well-placed and easy to access. There are D-rings on the shoulders and at waist level for clipping off accessories, lights, and safety gear. For recreational diving with a camera, torch, and SMB, there’s enough attachment space.

The cargo pockets on each side are large and zippered with anti-corrosion zippers. The plastic zipper teeth are quite big, which makes them durable but can make the pocket opening feel a bit narrow when you’re trying to access items quickly. The pockets are positioned slightly lower and farther back than on some BCDs, which makes the zippers hard to reach. I think Seac missed an opportunity here. Avoiding bulky integrated weight system connections could make room for big expandable pockets.

Build Quality and Materials

The Italian manufacturing really shows in the construction quality. The 1000-denier Cordura outer material is tough and resistant to abrasion. The stitching is solid, and the overall finish feels professional.

The reinforced bladder design holds up well over time. I’ve seen SEAC BCDs in use at by instructors who put their gear through heavy use, and they generally maintain their integrity well. The Cordura material resists punctures and tears better than some lighter-weight travel BCDs.

Comparison with Competitors

At $280-340, the SEAC Smart sits well below the Mares Prestige ($380-450) and the Aqualung Pro HD ($499-550). It also compares favorably to other entry-level jacket-style BCDs in the same price bracket.

The Mares Prestige offers more padding and swivel shoulder clips for added comfort, but as I mentioned in my Prestige review, quality control has been inconsistent with seams coming apart after limited use. The Smart’s Italian manufacturing and proven build quality give it an edge in reliability despite costing $100+ less.

The Aqualung Pro HD is a step up in price and comes with the reliability that the Aqualung brand is known for, plus ResisteK material that resists fading from salt and chlorine exposure. The Pro HD is built for dive professionals who need bombproof gear. However, it costs $150-200 more than the Smart and weighs more. For recreational divers who don’t need the Pro HD’s heavy-duty construction, the Smart delivers comparable performance at a much more accessible price point.

The value proposition is strong. You’re getting Italian manufacturing, quality materials, and proven stability performance at a budget-friendly price. That’s hard to beat in this category.

Our Take on the SEAC Smart

The SEAC Smart BCD delivers excellent stability and buoyancy control. The attitude control in all positions is genuinely impressive, especially at this price point. The Italian manufacturing shows in the build quality and attention to detail. The comfort level is very good, with cushioned shoulder straps and back padding that work well for long dives.

The weight system’s two-step release adds security but might slow down emergency ditching. The large plastic zipper teeth on the cargo pockets are durable but make the opening feel narrow. These are minor points, but worth noting.

This BCD is best suited for recreational divers who want a traditional jacket-style BCD with solid construction and performance. It’s also a great choice for new divers building their first gear setup that won’t break the bank.

Final Recommendation

Buy the SEAC Smart if you want a well-built, comfortable jacket-style BCD at a competitive price. It’s an excellent choice for recreational divers doing warm water diving, new divers getting their first BCD, or experienced divers looking for a quality at an affordable price.

The combination of Italian manufacturing, quality Cordura materials, and solid performance makes this one of the best values in the budget BCD category. You’re not sacrificing much compared to BCDs that cost hundreds more.

Skip it if you need the absolute lightest and most packable travel BCD. Full-foot travel BCDs or lighter models like the Cressi Travelight pack smaller. Also skip it if you’re planning extensive technical diving or need specific features like large lift capacity for doubles or drysuit diving.

For most recreational diving applications, the SEAC Smart offers outstanding value. It’s particularly well-suited for divers who appreciate quality construction and want gear that will last, without paying premium prices. The fact that it’s made in Italy with proper quality control is a genuine advantage in this price range.
