Suunto D5 Wrist Computer – a premium watch-style computer

Suunto is simply my favorite brand when it comes to dive computers. I bought my first Suunto 20 years ago (Mosquito) and have been diving with Suunto computers throughout my career. I have been diving with a Suunto D4 for many years and recently upgraded to the D5.

What’s Included

The D5 is a watch-style dive computer that you can actually wear every day. It has a stainless steel bezel with a composite case. The color LCD display measures 3.4 cm in diameter. The whole unit is 5.3 cm across and weighs 95 grams with the silicone strap. There are three buttons for navigation. The screen is protected by sapphire crystal glass.

Price sits around $500-550 USD with the USB cable included. You get multiple dive modes: Air, Nitrox, Gauge, and Apnea (freediving). Maximum depth rating is 100 meters. The computer uses Suunto’s Fused RGBM 2 algorithm. Nitrox support ranges from 21% to 50%. This is aimed at recreational divers who want a daily-wear computer. No air integration on this model.

The D5 comes with Bluetooth for wireless syncing. It includes a USB cable for charging and data transfer. The strap is interchangeable — Suunto offers various strap options sold separately.

Daily Use and Diving

Wearability

The biggest difference from my D4 is the color screen. It’s bright, sharp, and easy to read in all conditions. The display shows dive data clearly without being cluttered. I wear the D5 every day — to the office, to the gym, everywhere. It looks like a normal sport watch, not obviously a dive computer. The weight is comfortable for all-day wear. The sapphire crystal has held up perfectly — no scratches after months of daily use.

Interface and Navigation

The three-button interface is intuitive. Up, down, and select. Menu navigation is straightforward. Coming from the D4, the D5 felt familiar immediately. Settings are logically organized. I rarely need to consult the manual. The buttons are responsive and work well even with thick gloves.

Display Underwater

I’ve used the D5 for about 60 dives now, mostly in Southeast Asia and the Philippines. The color screen is excellent underwater. The high-contrast display makes numbers pop even in low visibility. At depth or in darker conditions, the backlight is bright enough without being blinding. I can glance at my NDL, depth, and time without any squinting or adjusting. Night diving, the backlight is perfect.

Algorithm Conservatism

The Fused RGBM 2 algorithm is conservative, as expected from Suunto. On liveaboards with multiple dives per day, I’m usually surfacing 5-15 minutes before buddies using Mares or Oceanic computers. This hasn’t been a problem for me — I value the conservative approach. But if you’re diving with less conservative computers and want maximum bottom time, this could frustrate you. The algorithm does allow some customization through personal adjustment settings.

Battery Life

The rechargeable battery lasts about 6-8 days with daily wear and no diving. With diving, it’s more like 3-5 days depending on dive frequency. I charge it about twice a week. The USB cable makes charging easy — same routine as charging a phone. On dive trips, I pack the cable and charge it every few nights. Battery anxiety hasn’t been an issue.

Connectivity and App

The Bluetooth sync with the Suunto app works flawlessly. After each dive, the computer automatically syncs when I’m near my phone. The app presents dive data clearly with detailed profiles, graphs, and statistics. I can share dives with students or upload them to online logbooks. The wireless connectivity is far more convenient than my old D4’s cable system.

Digital Compass

The D5 includes a built-in digital compass, which is a feature you don’t often see at this price point for watch-style computers. The compass is tilt-compensated, meaning it works accurately even when your wrist isn’t perfectly level. To activate it, you need to calibrate it first, which takes about 30 seconds of rotating the watch in a figure-eight pattern. Once calibrated, it’s reliable and easy to use underwater.

Competitive Context

At $500-550, the D5 competes with other watch-style computers like the Aqualung i200C ($300-350), Garmin Descent series ($500-1000+), and Shearwater Peregrine ($450). The Aqualung i200C is cheaper but has a smaller screen and fewer features. The Garmin Descent offers more topside features like GPS and fitness tracking but costs more. The Shearwater Peregrine has a bigger display and is popular with tech divers, but it’s bulkier for daily wear.

Compared to non-watch dive computers like the Suunto Zoop Novo ($300) or Mares Puck Lite ($300), the D5 costs significantly more. You’re paying for the watch form factor, color display, and premium build quality. If you don’t care about wearing your computer daily, those cheaper options offer similar dive functionality.

The D5 sits in a sweet spot for divers who want a quality watch-style computer without Garmin’s premium pricing. The color display and Suunto build quality justify the cost for many divers.

My Assessment

The D5’s main strengths are the color display, daily wearability, and Suunto’s reliable ecosystem. The screen is the best I’ve used on a dive computer — crisp, bright, and readable in all conditions. Being able to wear it every day means I’m never without a dive computer. The Bluetooth connectivity and app integration are excellent.

The conservative algorithm is a con for some, a pro for others. I appreciate the safety margin, but on intensive dive trips, it does limit bottom time compared to less conservative computers. The rechargeable battery requires discipline — you need to remember to charge it. The price is steep compared to basic dive computers, though reasonable for the watch-style category.

This computer suits recreational divers who want a quality daily-wear watch that happens to be a dive computer. It’s ideal for instructors, divemasters, and frequent divers who value having their computer always accessible.

Final Thoughts

Buy the D5 if you’re a frequent diver who wants a computer you can wear every day. It’s perfect for instructors, divemasters, or anyone doing 50+ dives per year who values quality and convenience. The color display and premium build justify the investment for serious divers.

Skip it if you’re a casual vacation diver doing 5-20 dives per year — cheaper computers offer similar functionality. Also skip if you want maximum bottom time on repetitive dives — the conservative algorithm will frustrate you.

For divers who want a premium watch-style computer with excellent display and build quality, the D5 delivers. After upgrading from my D4, I have no regrets. It’s become my constant companion both on land and underwater.
